Faith and servant leadership are two qualities Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. exhibited throughout his fight for equal rights. His work to create a different reality for all who are subjected to hatred, bigotry and tyranny set a standard that many leaders have looked to for direction.
As I reflect on his faith and service legacy, it is necessary for me to think about the work I currently do and the work I must do to ensure my hopes for a better world are realized. I had to ask myself two questions:
What kind ofworld do I want?- What can I do to make my want a reality?
As I reflected on the questions, I knew I wanted my children to also think about the type of world they desire. So, as a family, we created “I Have a Dream” vision boards.
I asked my children to complete the sentence, “I dream of a world…” as a theme for the vision board. We used computer paper, glue sticks, markers and magazines to create visual representations of what kind of world we want. After we finished, we then shared our vision boards and desires with each other.
This activity was a great way for us to remember Dr. King’s legacy, share our dreams for the world and bond as a family.
As we celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day next Monday, let us all remember to learn from his legacy and always remember to do our part to create the type of world we desire.
