Last week, I published an original poem, “Harriet: A Conversation with God“. I performed this poem at an event held at Third Street Bethel AME Church in Richmond, Virginia. This performance was the first time I performed an original poem in front of an audience.

Listen to the two-minute recitation of “Harriet: A Conversation with God” below. Rather than reciting the poem at the event, I prerecorded it with my son. During the event, I used movement as my performance tool. The recording opens and ends with one of Tubman’s favorite hymns, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” This recording of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” used is the songs first known recording.  Fisk University Jubilee Singers recorded it in 1909.

Third Street Bethel’s media team created a short compilation video from the event. At the 3:33-minute mark, catch a glimpse of my performance.

I am very grateful that Third Street Bethel hosted an event that showcased the incredible talent we have in the region and I am honored to have been a part of such an event.
