On December 1, 1955 a simple act of strength and steadfastness helped add more momentum to the social justice movement that was underway in the United States. Second class citizenship for Blacks in America was the norm and Jim Crow laws governed the South. Lynching (of men, women and children) was commonplace and other acts of violence against Blacks created a culture of fear and mistrust. However, faith, family and a strong sense of community gave Black people strength. Strength that made people like Rosa Parks face hate and discrimination with love and faith. This strength was present on that Montgomery bus on December 1, 1955.
As I think about Rosa Parks, I am reminded of Psalms 16:8 which closes with the phrase, “I shall not be moved.” I am inspired by her willingness to “sit” strong in the face of danger. Take a listen as Mrs. Parks discusses her historic account of bravery.
