Willie Iles Shares His Story of Philanthropy

Willie Iles is our 7th featured guest during Black Philanthropy Month 2015. Iles has been active in scouting most of his life and he shared his story with us. Tune in to hear his inspirational story of service.

Willie Iles was named national director of Government and Community Relations, Boy Scouts of America, effective August 12, 2008. He is responsible for managing the functions and giving leadership as the liaison to the Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America in working with the executive branch of the federal government and national community organizations in the areas of youth advocacy, environmental awareness, workforce preparedness, youth healthy living, education outreach, and volunteerism. He works closely with the Boy Scouts of America’s national leadership team to coordinate the Report to the Nation, reports to the states, and national community organization initiatives in order to reconnect with families and youth in America. Since March 2002, he has served as national group director, Development & Strategic Initiatives, giving leadership to the Marketing & Communication Division, Crisis Communications, Research Service, Scoutreach Division, Finance Support Division, National Scouting Museum, Legislative Affairs, and the Learning for Life program, an affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America.

Iles has been active in Scouting since his youth. He began his Scouting career in 1971 as a local council employee in Houston, Texas. While in Houston, he was promoted to Exploring executive in 1974, senior district executive/multiple person in 1977, district director in 1983, director of Exploring in 1984, field director in 1987, and director of field service in 1991. In 1995, he became chief executive officer for the Southeast Louisiana Area Council in Metairie, Louisiana. In 1999, he joined the Southern Region as assistant regional director-operations. In 2001, he became the deputy regional director-operations for the Southern Region, which comprises 13 states and 95 councils. In January 2002, Iles joined the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America as the director of the Development & Strategic Initiatives Group before assuming his present assignment.
